My class went to the museum yesterday.  I enjoyed two exhibits; the shoe exhibit and the William Orville Douglas exhibit.  The shoe exhibit was interesting.  A man named David Child owned it.  There were over 6000 pairs of shoes.  There were also seven types of shoe heels.  In the 1800’s, the shoes worn were boot shoes with straight toe tips.  In the old days, it was bad for women to show their ankles or their toes.  In earlier times, people had smaller feet and a smaller shoe size, which is why they had shoe sizes like size 4 AAA, and is why some old women don’t buy shoes anymore.   The most expensive pair of shoes was a pair of Jimmy Choos, which were worth $1295.00 when they were put in production.  They were also my favorite pair of shoes.

The other exhibit was about William O. Douglas.  William was born in Minnesota during the year 1898.  When he was young, his family moved to Yakima, Washington, USA and he graduated at a local high school, A.C. Davis, back then called Yakima high school.  After high school, Douglas graduated from Columbia University.  William O. Douglas served as a United States Supreme Court judge for 36 years before retiring.  He was known for his environmental movements, civil rights movements, and his individual rights movements.  William only retired because the Supreme Court refused re-entry until he was fully recovered from a heart attack he suffered from earlier.  He died in 1980.  For his actions, there is a statue of William Orville Douglas at A.C. Davis high school.

Yesterday, at school, we took an online test to see what careers we may like.  The test showed that I would be good in the career area of “scientific”.  I agree because I enjoy science.  My favorite classes in school are science and arithmetic.  I am also interested in how things work.  The career that appealed to me was meteorologist.  Nationally, on average, meteorologists make $40 a hour. That is a lot!  I might one day become a meteorologist.

The other career area the test said I might enjoy was business detail.  Business detail is like an accountant.  Business detail is basically anyone who works in a business of selling things, fixing electronics, and things like that.  Business detail is very important!  I don’t agree with the computer, through.  I do not want to sell people things.  I also don’t want to fix electronics.  Both of those jobs don’t make enough money in my opinion ($17 a hour).

“Hey Jose!” said Fred.  Fred was an adventurous person.  He loved taking risks.  He also loved the rush of accomplishing something.

“What’s up?” asked Jose.  Jose was a person who liked to achieve goals.

Do you want to climb the Rocky Mountains?  I’ve heard it’s beautiful.”

“Sure,” said Jose.”Let’s go right now.”  So they did.

“We are here now,” said Fred.  ”Let’s climb.”

About two hours later, Jose asked, “How much longer until we get to the top?’

Fred replied, ” not much, considering it took two hours to get here.”

Fifteen minutes later, Jose exclaimed, “we’re here!  At the top!”

“Yes we are,” said Fred.  ”Told you it was beautiful. The hard part is getting down…”                              

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is an important holiday to many Mexicans and Mexican Americans.  The Day of the Dead is a combination of Cristian and Mexican cultures.  The celebration is in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day on November 1st and All Souls’ Day on November 2nd.  November 1st is celebrated to be for the children who died, and November 2nd is celebrated for the adults who died.  The ancient Aztec people originally created The Day of the Dead.  So the deceased could hear the livings’ prayers, people create private altars so the dead would come and hear the prayers directed at them.  People place food on the altars so the dead could not eat them, but feast on the delicious aromas.  The altar should also have scented candles, a picture of the person, and various other objects to remember them by.

People place salt, candles, tissues and water to represent the four elements of earth.  The four elements are earth (salt), air (tissues), fire (candles), and water.  Depending on what region of Mexico people are from, they put different fruits on the altar.  Plans for The Day of the Dead are made throughout the year by the whole family, including gathering the goods to be offered to their dead loved ones.  Toys are brought for deceased children to be put on their graves.  A common symbol of Day of the Dead is the skull.  The Day of the Dead traditions are not universal.  Traditions often vary from town to town.

Martin the Warrior is a Redwall novel by Brian Jacques about a mouse named Martin.  This book is an adventure/ fantasy book.  I’m on page 220.  I am about half way through.  Martin the Warrior starts by a large hedgehog named Bultip and a mouse named Aubretia find their way to Redwall abbey.  The many creatures of Redwall have a feast, and then tell stories.  Aubretia shares a story about the abbey’s founder, Martin the warrior.  Strangely, none of the abbey creatures have ever heard that story.  Of course, Aubretia was encouraged to tell the story.

So far, Martin has escaped from being a slave by an evil stoat king named Badrang with the help of a few friends named Laterose and Grumm. Martin and his friends then travel north and become enslaved again by pygmy shrews.  when enslaved, the friends meet a nice hedgehog named Pallum.  Pallum, Grumm, Laterose (or Rose), and Martin get released and march into a swamp. In the swamp, the friends get attacked by cannibal lizards.  A heron Named Warden saves them by eating the cannibal lizards.  I think the plot itself is good, but I don’t like the thought of a cannibal lizard- eating heron.  One quote I liked was when the Warden says,  ”I am the law!”  I think this is important because the Warden keeps saying that.  I would recommend this book to others that enjoy adventure/ fantasy books because I enjoyed the storyline so far, and this book has a lot of adventure.

In The Fires of Merlin, T.A. Barron writes about a wonderful land called Fincayra.  In Fincayra, A young wizard finds many adventures.  In this story, Merlin is destined to slay a dragon.  This dragon burned most of Fincayra because of one thing.  The people of his homeland killed his spouse and children because they feared his family. His family were the final dragons, so the dragon rampaged until Merlin’s grandfather lulled it to sleep with a spell.  The spell would wear off when it was Fincayra’s darkest days.  The dragon then slumbered until Fincayra’s darkest days, when Merlin was a young wizard.

Merlin was then notified By a dwarf wizard that the dragon was destroying her home.  Merlin then travels north from his home with his sister, Rhia.  They soon have to cross a marsh.  Merlin and Rhia fall down a lot, and once a leach almost bit Rhia.  Soon,  they found a island.  On the island, Merlin gets eaten by a living stone.  After three hours, the living stone spit merlin out because it couldn’t digest Merlin’s magic.  That’s as far as I got.  I only reached page 80 (about half of the book.)  One memorable part was when the author described what the living stone said to Merlin.  “ You are a strange one, young man.  Although  I have very nearly destroyed you, I cannot seem to consume you.  There is something in you I cannot reach, cannot crush.” I liked that part because Merlin would have died long ago if it weren’t for his magic.

If I was a flavor of ice cream, I would be vanilla.  I believe so because I am kind of plain.  Other people don’t think that.  Some people call me boring, like some people with vanilla ice cream.  Others think I am exciting.  It really depends on the person.  Like people with vanilla ice cream.  Some people really enjoy vanilla. Others, not so much.

Some people really express how much I am like vanilla ice cream.  For example, my parents really love me.  On the other hand, my sister sometimes avoids me at all costs.  Other people honestly enjoy my company.  Other times, though, they say I annoy them.  Most of the time they really enjoy me.  My brother, he thinks that I am boring, but he loves me all the same.  My friends might not describe me as vanilla, but I think if I was a flavor of ice cream, I would be vanilla.
